A Quick Guide to Different RYA Powerboat Courses

“Royal Yachting Association” is a nationwide governing body for different types of a dinghy, yacht, rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), sports boats, personal watercraft, and motor cruising. The association is also involved in activities like windsurfing and sail racing. RYA is the principal representative for inland waterway cruising. The association also intends to promote RYA powerboat and related courses on it.  



About RYA Powerboat Courses

RYA powerboat has the basic and preliminary courses don’t demand eligibility criteria, except for the fact that the minimum age of the applicant should be about 12 years. However, the higher level courses do require a pre-requisite knowledge about navigation of the boats at different hours of the day and night. 

The preliminary two courses provided are as follows:
  • Power Boat Level 1
  • Power Boat Level 2

Other secondary and higher level courses on powerboats are:
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
  • Safety Boat
  • Tender Operator course

Generally, these courses extend for nearly two days. Though the courses are short, they are highly beneficial for a power-boating and cruising. 

Knowing the Course Levels 

The course fee for Power Boat Level 1 and Power Boat Level 2 are approximately equal to 1,400 AED and 2500 AED respectively. The course on Power Boat Level 1 is only for a day, while the course on Power Boat Level 2 extends for two days. In terms of the difficulty level, the former course is comparatively easier than the latter. Completion of the Power Boat Level 1 course facilitates in establishing a strong foundation to Power Boat Level 2. However, the outcome of the second course leads to obtaining a DMCA license for up to 12 meters. Because of this reason, people mostly opt for the course on Power Boat Level 2. It is known to be the best-seller RYA course on powerboats. 
The course comprises of both theoretical and practical skills. Henceforth, the students must be able to perceive the theoretical knowledge of RYA powerboat and also learn the skills while driving a powerboat. 

Learning the Theoretical Part

The theoretical part of the course includes topics like the different types of crafts, their advantages and disadvantages with respect to sea keeping abilities, engines and drives, the merits and demerits of outboard, inboard and outdrive units, daily maintenance checks, basic fault diagnosis and use of GPS onboard. Knowledge about the fuel tanks, fuel lines, batteries, wirings, etc. is important for a power boater.



Learning Navigation Skills

The content of the intermediate RYA course includes daytime navigation skills, passage planning, and procedure of plotting instruments, GPS and electronic navigation. Keeping aside the contents of the intermediate RYA course, the contents of the advanced course comprises of the techniques used for skippering in coastal passageways. 

The safety course as provided by RYA requires for certification on Power Boat Level 2 as a pre-requisite. The STCW Basic Safety Training includes various recovery techniques used for different craft and fleet management. Generally, the STCW training provides courses on Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Fighting & Fire Prevention, Elementary First Aid and Personal Safety & Social Responsibility. The training usually extends for two days. 

However, there is another type of RYA powerboat course which is known as the Tender Operator. It includes topics on passenger safety & comfort, day-night pilotage and combating emergency situations.
